Who can join?

Any undergraduate or graduate student at the University of Notre Dame or Saint Mary’s College interested in racing and improving their sailing abilities, from competitive racers to inquisitive newcomers.

Why you should join

From the warm team atmosphere to the many opportunities to travel and sail at top regattas across the Midwest sailing community, the Notre Dame Sailing Team is one of the most exciting club sports on campus. Additionally, because the team is student-run, it also presents many possibilities to take leadership positions and learn how to run a competitive organization.

Who to contact

For more information about the team, please contact the 2022-2023 commodore Andrew Gallagher at ndsail@nd.edu . For updates, follow our Instagram account (@nd_sail) and like our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/irishsail).

FAQs

Is sailing a varsity sport at Notre Dame?

Sailing is a club sport at Notre Dame, meaning that our team is student coached and managed. Many of the teams with whom we compete in Midwest Collegiate Sailing Association (MCSA) are also club teams.  Unfortunately, this means we cannot recruit or give any sailing scholarships through the university.

When are practices held?

When the team is in season, practice is held Monday through Thursday from 4:00pm to 6:00 pm. We understand that many students have extremely busy schedules, so participation in these practices is optional.  However, the more practices you attend, the better you will get and the more likely you will have an opportunity to sail in regattas.

How do I get to compete?

Any team member that regularly attends practice and wishes to sail competitively is encouraged to sign up for regattas in which we participate all around the Midwest. Every dedicated team member gets an opportunity to race. Final decisions on who will get to sail are made by the team's elected captains and the executive board.

Can St. Mary's girls join the team?

While we all practice together, Saint Mary's has their own team for competition purposes. If you go to SMC, contact the SMC commodore Grace Graziano at ggraziano01@saintmarys.edu for information.
